Curls gone wild - part 1

Curls gone wild - part 1

Embrace your curls. They are beautiful and full of life, just like you!

Have you ever wondered what life would be like “if only” your curls didn’t sit that way? Perhaps you’ve spent your life in one big debacle between you and a straightening device, or maybe you’re just looking for ways to add a little va-va-voom?

We know it’s not all fun and games living in curly town, but the power to owning your curls lies in the hands of none other than you. Whenever you’re feeling like the grass is greener on the other side - remember that there are girls battling with styling tools and products just to get a GLIMPSE of what you’ve got.

Every hair type has its ups and downs. The key to gorgeous hair is to embrace what you were born with because it’s beautiful (a little riot control oil and following these steps won’t go amiss either).

Pre-shower - Take care with your hair

Ensure you brush your hair before a wash. This will help to distribute natural oils from your scalp to your hair. Take care when brushing, as vigorous motions can cause damage to the hair. Start at the bottom of your hair and gradually move upwards.

“It’s much easier to comb through knots at the ends first” - bhave hair guru, Neil.

Let’s take this to the shower

Most curlies are familiar with the frizzy fiasco that comes with washing one’s hair. You’ve finally dried and styled your lovely locks, stepped outside and BAM - the humidity/rain is back to playing havoc with your curls. There is no point looking like Beyonce if you haven’t checked the forecast.

Rain, hail or shine - there are ways to make your curls bhave, starting in the shower!

Curly hair tends to be drier and more vulnerable to humidity. Hair follicles try to soak up the moisture in the air, resulting in an expansion of the hair cuticle, aka FRIZZ.

We suggest you avoid using any shampoos that contain sulphates or alcohol as both ingredients tend to dry out curly hair. Try bhave’s hydrator shampoo and conditioner for extra hydration.

Hot tip! Hot water is notorious for promoting frizz so stick to rinsing your hair with cool water for best results.

Conditioner (formerly known as magic in a bottle)

If you’re like us, you’re always running out of your conditioner before your shampoo (first world problems), this is because we curlies need all the moisture we can get, right? Follow these tips to keep your curls in check!

1.After conditioning, use our all-in-one star-powered leave-in elixir, super nova to help gently detangle knots while delivering moisture. Detangling and ripping your hair should never be the same thing! Or;

2. Leave a small amount of conditioner in your hair post-shower, this will help your hair retain moisture throughout the day.

3.No towel, no worries! Ring your hair out with a cotton t-shirt or microfibre towel as regular towels absorb too much water and moisture out of the hair. Remember, less moisture = frizz.

Sneaky tip: “Before stepping into the shower, apply a deep conditioner to your hair, tuck it into a shower cap and wash your body before rinsing out the deep conditioner and washing your hair. The steam from the shower will help lock in moisture.”

Styling (more like s-t-r-u-g-g-l-i-n-g)

Our final anti-frizz tricks can be discovered in the styling segment of your curl-regime.

The most important thing to remember when styling is the less you mess with your curls, the better! Your hair tends to be naturally dry so excessive washing, brushing and drying is going to do more harm than good! Follow these steps to perfect curls.

1. Starting with towel dried hair, apply a small amount of the bhave curl defining creme to the ends of your hair. Gently brush through with a wide tooth-comb or your fingers.

2. Use a diffuser (on a cooler setting) to slow-dry your hair, keeping the hair mostly upside down and being careful to cup the curls. When you’re moving the dryer to diffuse the next section, turn off your dryer while you readjust to prevent unwanted frizz.

3. Finish your look with a little help from some riot control oil. This will help to seal the moisture and nourish your hair from the inside out!

Flyaway's? Fuzz? They’ll be a thing from the past.

The next time someone compares your hair to a lion’s mane, be sure to give them your loudest ROAR and be proud of what you have!

It’s your hair, your life, your rules!
